the main figure here is the rising m2 followed by the falling M2 (pay no attention to the answer).
this lends itself to two patterns: the octatonic scale (see the soprano mm. 13-16) and phrygian cadences (the one at the end is the inarguable, but the bass egressing down by a half-step evokes it, even if the voices above are a mess).
too short. should probably write more.
